A prasinophycean flagellate blooming underneath the ice of a Danish brackish water fjord has been examined with the light and electron microscope. The dominant species Pyramimonas nansenii is unique in possessing two different types of large square scales as part of the cell periplast. Internal cell characteristics include the presence of trichocysts and a paracrystalline pyrenoid matrix. Pyramimonas nansenii is a typical representative of the subgenus Trichocystis .
