Hedbergia is described as a new, monotypic genus in the Scrophulariaceae, subfamily Rhinanthoideae, tribe Rhinantheae. The species H. abyssinica is transferred from Bartsia. Hedbergia abyssinica is the most primitive taxon so far known in the subtribe Euphrasineae.
