The flavonoid pigments of Potamogeton praelongus Wulfen, P. perfoliatus L., and P. richardsonii (A. Benn.) Rydberg were isolated and identified. Five flavone glycosides based on three aglycone types and one C‐glycosylflavone were identified. Potamogeton perfoliatus and P. richardsonii are most similar in flavonoid composition. The greatest number of compounds are found in P. praelongus with the other two species having a subset of its profile. The flavonoid data suggest that P. richardsonii arose by means other than hybridization between P. perfoliatus and P. praelongus.
