The ontogeny of elastoviscin in the Orchidaceae was investigated with the light, transmission electron and scanning electron microscope. This substance is composed of unsaturated lipids and most probably a product of the ground cytoplasm of the tapetal cells. Different forms of elastoviscin are described. Further investigations are needed to determine whether it is homologous to pollenkitt.
