Detailed studies of comprehensive herbarium material confirmed that the afroalpine Cerastium adnivale Chiov. is too indistinctly delimited from the earlier described C. octandrum Hochst. ex A. Rich, to be given more than varietal rank. The restricted distribution of var. adnivale on only some of the high mountains harbouring C. octandrum s. lat. as well as results of experimental cultivation show that the reduced pubescence of the former cannot be due to environmental influence alone but must result from genetic differences. The derivation of var. adnivale from C. octandrum s. lat. is discussed.
