The field of substance abuse, or chemical dependency, is no longer a separate or peripheral discipline “taking care of its own.” The realities of widespread alcoholism and drug abuse are now recognized to cross the boundaries of all professional disciplines, from education to mental health to social services. It has become essential for practitioners, serving a wide range of people with varied and multiple identified problems, to be knowledgeable in the diagnosis, intervention, referral and treatment of chemical dependence.
