The soil forming processes of podzolization, calcification, alkalization and laterization are briefly described and mention is made of the broad soil groups which develop under their influence. The relationship between these soils and environmental factors of climate, vegetation, time and local relief is explained. Fossil soils of various parts of China and elsewhere are described and suggestions regarding past climatic conditions, as expressed by the fossil soils, are presented. Future detailed study of fossil soils in China is recommended, not only as a means of reconstructing the past but as a possible method for predicting the future.
