Summary Diabetic nephorpathy is a major cause of renal disease, but clinically evident diabetic nephropathy may be reduced by better glycaemic control. Patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes should be screened yearly for microalbuminuria and treatment commenced with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors if indicated.
