Summary The transplant waiting list needs to be actively managed by the transplant centre in a systematic way to achieve any degree of efficiency and effectiveness. This paper describes the key role of the transplant nurse in a large centre with over 300 people on the transplant waiting list. It focuses on the way patients are assessed, how the list is updated and the benefit of nurse involvement in the work‐up of potential live donors.
