Summary Increased demand for haemodialysis and the stresses on existing units have led to a crisis in renal replacement therapy around the world. Allied to this is a realisation that dialysis needs to be viewed increasingly as a long‐term option for patients. New approaches to treating people with dialysis need to be developed to reflect this. By adopting a modern approach, home haemodialysis can be a viable, indeed an optimal, treatment for many patients.
