Thomas Forsyth McIlwraith was the first and for many years the only academic anthropologist to teach at a Canadian university. This paper examines his contributions to museum work at the Royal Ontario Museum, to the development of an archaeological program in Ontario, and to the introduction of anthropological instruction at the University of Toronto. Drawing from an unpublished manuscript by 1. Norman Emerson and from other contemporary sources, the paper assesses the impact of Mcllwraith's thirty‐nineyear career at the University of Toronto on the development of anthropology in Canada.
