The results of a small group experiment indicated the ambiguity of tension‐withdrawal behaviour as an index of group cohesion. Data revealed a high incidence of tension and of “self‐expected isolates” in a highly cohesive group‐type. Analysis and interpretation indicated a causal pattern involving the definition of the situation by members of this particular group‐type. Feelings of obligation and of inadequacy due to the reward‐distribution situation apparently resulted in great tension and feelings of rejection. The particular situation had generated both high cohesion and high tension in the same group.
