Summary While there is no magic formula or a single path to achieving independence in an academic research setting, apart from intellect and scientific ability, persistence, drive, and flexibility certainly belong to the mix of valuable skills. In a perspective from a junior scientist on her own journey to independence, this talk discusses some of the challenges and obstacles encountered along the way, and shares personal insights, in an attempt to aid the upcoming generation of early‐career scientists in their own journey.
