Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) is a central component to health and social care research carried out in the UK, Europe, North America and Australia. It has a long history, from its roots in social activism and in patient movements through to clinical and political policy changes. However, PPI is yet to emerge as an important consideration in research and development within ophthalmology. The presentation will explore the some of the basics of patient and public involvement, including what it is, who it encompasses, and why PPI has an important role in research. The presentation will review the outcomes of the recent ‘Glaucoma Day’ held in London as an illustration of the importance of involving the public in research. Finally, the challenges and impact of PPI on eye research will be discussed
