Purpose This lecture will provide an overview over past and current gene therapy approached to treat corneal pathologies. Methods The presentation will include both viral and non‐viral gene transfer strategies and will present data from the authors and other research groups. Results Depending on the carrier transduction rates of corneal cells vary. However, outcome has ben promising, also during corneal storage and after corneal transplantation. Conclusion Gene therapy to the cornea is a relatively new but promising field.
