Purpose The question remains if visual acuity measurements in clinical ophthalmology should use the well known Snellen notation or instead should switch to the slightly less intuitive logMAR notation Methods The differences in Snellen and logMAR notation will be explained in order to understand the (dis)advantages of each notation Results When measuring visual acuity, we should always take into account the purpose of the measurement: refraction and prescription of correction, reporting (low) visual acuity in clinical trials, ... Conclusion LogMAR notation of visual acuity has several advantages but the Snellen notation is widespread and can be maintained in specific conditions.
