Heredity for cataract was penetrated in an epidemiologic investigation on cataract in glass workers with a high occupational exposure to infrared (IR) radiation. Heredity was found to increase the risk for IR‐exposed workers, 70 years of age and older, of developing an advanced cataract by 2–3 times. Synergism between heredity and the cataractogenic factor, occupational IR‐exposure, is suggested.
