The early development of impaired visual functions awaits the serious consideration of clinicians and researchers. Rudimentary vision may be influnced very much by active stimulation during early weeks and years of life. Methods of assessment of visual functions and of visual stimulation/habilitation has to be renewed and properly evaluated. The procedures used at a Centre for Visually Handicapped Children in Sweden, when dealing with small children with very reduced vision, are reported. The influence of various factors on visual and oculomotor functions is discussed.
