A compilation of the records of all registered glaucoma patients in Gothenburg in the year of 1976 was analysed for the prevalence of glaucoma, the age distribution, the sex distribution, the presence of unilateral or bilateral disorder, and the age of onset of glaucoma. The glaucoma population consisted of 2776 individuals making and overall prevalence of 0.63%. There was no sex difference when comparison was made within each age group. A marked rise in prevalence was found in older age groups. Some problems in analysing and comparing mass data are discussed. A sample of this glaucoma population will be selected for further detailed investigation.
