The effects on the intraocular pressure (IOP), systolic and diastolic blood pressures and heart rate of the beta 1 ‐adrenergic agonist prenalterol was determined in a double‐masked, randomized study on healthy volunteers. A solution of placebo or 5 mg prenalterol was administered orally. No effect on IOP was observed while prenalterol had significant cardiovascular effects compared to placebo. Thus the present study does not support the assumption that betai‐adrenergic receptors are involved in the regulation of IOP.
