Consequent to reports of demonstrable collagenolytic activity in connection with several types of corneal ulcer, some twenty patients were treated with cysteine chloride, which is known to inhibit this collagenolytic activity. The drug was administered as 0.1 M eye drops four times a day. In three patients the effect was very good, and in two it was considered favourable. In the other cases, the evaluation of the results was hampered chiefly by pathological conditions concomitant with the corneal affection. The only side effect noted from the drug was smarting. Since it appears to entail no risks, cysteine therapy may be considered worth trying if favourable results cannot be obtained by other medication.
