66 cataract‐extracted eyes have been examined for presence of mucus and pus around sutures by vital staining with a mixture of tetrazolium and alcian blue. Bared sutures are always enveloped in mucus. Pus is more often seen around conjunctival sutures (57%) than around perforated corneo‐scleral sutures (29%). The incidence of pus around sutures seems to be independent of the suture material used (7‐0 silk against 6‐0 collagen) and the postoperative interval (two days to four months). The incidence rises in relation to infectious conjunctivitis. Mucus is found in diastases after gaping conjunctival wounds. Pus is contained in 45% of them. Micro‐abscess at suture was noticed in 9% of the eyes.
