Normal conjunctival mucous production amounts to about 2–3 μl/day in each eye, estimated from the goblet cell turn‐over and from the movement of the mucous thread in the inferior conjunctival fornix. Normal tear secretion is 2–3 ml/day in each eye, calculated from dyedilution tests and from corneal epithelial cell desquamation. The ratio between the amounts of mucous and serous secretion in the conjunctival fluid is on the order of 1 to 1000.
