Cover description: Fisherman using a cast‐net to capture bait‐fish among mangroves in Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve, Mexico. Fishing here is regulated and well managed through a series of fi shing co‐operatives, ensuring long‐term viability of fi shstocks and a secure future for local people. This site lies at the heart of the Western Caribbean ecoregion, a unique ecological region rich in mangroves, coral reefs and seagrasses. Almost 20% of this ecoregion now lies in marine protected areas (MPAs), well above the global average of just 4%. It is hoped that the very positive lessons being learned from such sites will encourage wider uptake of MPAs as a critical management tool in other ecoregions. Photo: Mark Spalding.
