The need to match residency program experiences with the Interests, skills, and personal goals of residents is Influenced by many factors. A structured system, the Individualized Educational Plan, is described which provides a formalized means of addressing each of these needs. The development of an educational plan, similar in concept to the development of a formal treatment plan for patients, provides the basis for the system. The system provides both the program director and the resident with the means to evaluate in detail the resident's progress and the program's performance in helping the resident achieve competency.
