This paper was originally presented at the Third Annual National Conference on Special Care Issues in Dentistry, April 12–14,1991 , at the American Dental Association Headquarters, Chicago . Summary The practice of dentistry in the institutional setting differs from the private practice of dentistry in several ways. These dissimilarities can cause the “institutional dentist” to be vulnerable to criticism by state dental boards, human rights advocacy groups, and regulatory agencies. Effective strategies have been developed for reducing the professional vulnerability of the dentist who provides oral health care in the institutional environment. This paper presents several workable solutions to the problems faced by the institutional dentist.
