A description of the patient with autism is presented along with the problems faced by dental care personnel in the treatment of these patients. A study of the use of a progressive sedation technique describes effectiveness, dosages, and levels of treatability. Results show that sedation using hydroxyzine pamoate/diazepam combination as pre‐medication and N 2 O/O 2 analgesia is an acceptable technique for sedation in these patients.
