Summary Familiarity of the dentist with the currently used scheme for diagnosing the patient who has a mentally handicapping condition provides vital information. This scheme will assist in the preparation and interpretation of a properly worded consultation to the mental health professional caring for the patient. It will allow for the formulation of a comprehensive dental treatment plan consistent with the patient's emotional and cognitive status as well as alert the dentist to the patient's potential perceptions and misconceptions of care.
