Summary The flow rate, pH, buffering capacity, and viscosity of stimulated whole saliva of 54 noninstitutionalized older people were determined. The subjects all wore removable dentures, complete or partial, and were 73 years old and older. The salivary flow rate of the men was found to be higher than that of the women, and particularly low buffering capacity values were observed in the men. Seventy percent of this population used one or several medications. Those subjects using medications had a decreased flow rate and an increased salivary viscosity. The occurrence of high Lactobacillus and yeast counts was connected with the low flow rate and the high viscosity of saliva.
