SUMMARY A significant portion of the US population has been diagnosed as having schizophrenia. Within this report, the psychopathology of the disorder and the American Psychiatric Association's diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia are reviewed. The medical/pharmacological methods of treatment and the interrelationship between the disease process, the medical therapy, and the incidence of dental disease are described; the appropriate nomenclature can help the dentist obtain meaningful consultative advice. Necessary precautions must be taken when an individual, who is receiving certain psychotropic drugs, is to receive dental treatment.
