This paper explores the place of research in health policy decisions. Potential explanations of the closure of Wolfe Home, an inpatient alcoholism treatment unit are examined, with reference to a theoretical framework. A number of evaluations of Wolfe Home are described, and their implications analysed. Their recommendations are discussed in the context of Hospital Board and Health Department policy as identified by interviews with key informants. Tentative conclusions are drawn as to the influence of research information, management attitudes and professional group interests.
