An administrative system which rationalizes the management of nursing home waiting lists has been developed and introduced to the Bundoora Extended Care Centre catchment area. The system improves the reliability and ease of management of each individual nursing home list, without interfering with the nursing home's right to select its own applicants. The high level of continued voluntary participation in the service is one measure of its benefits. In addition to administrative functions, the system provides a potentially valuable research tool in monitoring the unmet demand by appropriately assessed applicants for nursing home care. This should facilitate rational planning for this increasingly important area of the welfare budget.
