A Smoke Free Day, modelled on the Great American Smokeout, was held in Perth, Western Australia on 10th November, 1982. Under the theme “Give It Away For A Day”, the day was promoted heavily on television and radio, in the press and in other ways. Some three months after the day, 93 per cent of subjects indicated their awareness of it and 56 per cent could recall the logo. An estimated 36.5 per cent of smokers tried to give up on the Day and 23.2 per cent succeeded; 2.3 per cent gave up and were still non‐smokers three months later. Among non‐smokers, 47.4 per cent encouraged a smoker to give up on the Day and 14.6 per cent considered that they had succeeded. A majority of both smokers (52.8 per cent) and non‐smokers (81.6 per cent) considered that the Smoke Free Day was a “good idea”.
