Summary A price index for hospital inputs was presented for the period 1970‐71 to 1978‐79. For non‐labour inputs the CPI was found to be satisfactory. For labour inputs, a single labour price index was generally satisfactory for all States and a wide range of hospitals —although some exceptions were apparent. It was found that the deflator used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics has significantly underestimated the impact of inflation in hospitals.
