The world has been united through the most puzzling, devastating, communicable disease of this century—acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The unusual biology of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the varying modes of its transmission, the lack of effective primary and secondary preventive measures, and the impact of its related diseases are some of the incredible challenges confronted by health care providers, policy makers, researchers, and all aspects of society for over a decade. From the beginning, dental practitioners, researchers, and educators have actively responded to the epidemic—first in their own cities and countries, then on an international level. This presentation highlights the oral health community's response to the HIV pandemic as a case study in international collaboration.
