Objective:  Two cases of rare spindle cell tumours of the tongue are described. Solitary fibrous tumour is a mesenchymal neoplasm which is usually benign and malignant fibrous histiocytoma is a high grade aggressive sarcoma. Materials and methods:  Two patients presented to us with a mass at the base of the tongue. It is essential to keep tumours such as SFT and MFH in the differential diagnosis of lesions at the tongue base. Results:  Histological similarities with other soft tissue tumours may present as a diagnostic challenge and immunohistochemistry plays a pivotal role to clinch the diagnosis. Conclusion:  Surgical excision is the treatment of choice as they respond poorly to radiotherapy.
