Scientific communication may be impaired because portions of today's watershed literature are unimaginative, uninspiring, and unread. The literature of the last century, however, abounds with prose of great beauty and clarity. Selections taken from the works of Powell, Gilbert, Muir, Ruskin, and Marsh set a literary standard for all 20th Century scientists.
