The difficulties involved in evaluating family therapists or family therapy training are evidenced by the virtual absence of instruments to guide such evaluations. This paper describes the product‐in‐progress of the authors' struggle with these difficulties; an instrument consisting of a videotape of an enacted family therapy first session and a series of multiple‐choice questions regarding the respondents' observations, conceptualizations and recommendations about the tape. It is hoped that the instrument itself as well as the description of the process of its development will be of heuristic value to the family therapy field.
