The mental health professional is increasingly being called upon by the courts to assist them in evaluating and intervening in families involved in disputes over custody or visitation of children. The evaluation requires the participation and cooperation of the entire family; assessing only individual dynamics and competencies is inadequate. In intervening in the family and making a recommendation to the court, the interviewer should take into account the well‐being and perspectives of all family members, especially the loyalties of the children and the responsibilities and roles of the parents .
