This paper reflects the thoughts, observations and clinical experiences of the authors and two dozen of their colleagues in treating people involved in an assortment of non‐marital sexual relationships. The scant existing literature is alluded to when pertinent. Ten types of non‐married couple and group sex patterns and four special kinds of relationships that are of particular interest to therapists and to which they might find themselves peculiarly susceptible are described. Similarities between the philosophies, treatment approaches and referral patterns to psychologists and clergymen are elucidated; major differences are highlighted. One conclusion is that there is a need for much research into what constitutes effective treatment for people living alternate lifestyles to monogamous unions.
