Following Hinshelwood (1995), the paper points to an overlooked point of cultural access to psychoanalysis in early 20th century England – the enthusiastic reception of Freudianism amongst scientists in Cambridge. The manuscripts of the Marxist X‐ray crystallographer, J.D. Bernal, are employed to reveal his quasi‐religious enthusiasm during the 1920s for psychoanalysis as the foundation for a revolution in all the sciences; this enthusiasm disappeared with Bernal's growing commitment to the cause of socialist science.
