This lecture is about psychoanalytic hypotheses and theories about a mental function called symbol formation. Disturbances in the development of this function lead to disturbances of the capacity to communicate. Clinical vignettes will show different degrees of impairment of this function and also how its development goes hand in hand with the acquisition of the sense of inner and external reality.
