By identifying the three fundamentals of brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy – (1) time limit, (2) therapeutic focus, (3) therapist's activity – this type of therapy is established as a distinct therapeutic modality with distinct ‘active containing’. The way this ‘custom‐tailored structure’ may be adapted to the patient and used to reflect and intensify dynamic aspects of the treatment's focus is demonstrated through clinical material.
