This paper examines how homosexuality has been described by a number of writers on the subject, and compares these accounts with the author's experience of his own sexuality. A critique is offered of contemporary accounts of homosexuality on grounds of their inconsistency and inadequacy: this is illustrated with specific examples of sexual behaviour from research findings and the press. Clinical material shows clients' sexual experiences are as varied and diverse as the multiplicity of theoretical accounts which seek to explain them. The importance of caution on the part of the psychotherapist when making sense of sexual material is emphasized.
