Current research into Psychotherapy outcomes is reviewed in so far as it bears on the information needed to evaluate the value of purchasing psychotherapy services. Three aspects of psychotherapeutic treatment are discussed separately: efficacy (does it work), efficiency (how well does it work) and acceptability (how ‘nice’ or ‘nasty’ is it to take). It is argued that the existing research supports a cautious but positive assessment on all these aspects.
