. 84 patients treated with individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy in the Adult Department of the Tavistock Clinic were followed up 3 to 9 years after the end of treatment. Adjustment level at intake and number of sessions were found to correlate with outcome. More specifically, capacity to relate and problem‐solving ability were found to be predictive of outcome. The significance of the findings is discussed within the context of the debate concerning the efficacy of psychotherapy.
