A novel model for the sampling of particulate materials is presented. In this model, the sampling error in concentration estimates due to the random packing of the particles in the batch is distributed according to the recently developed mass‐based multinomial distribution. Using the model and assuming ideal sampling, a scheme to estimate the minimum sample mass is verified with computer simulation.
