This paper is not a systematic review of the entire field of mutagenesis by ultraviolet light, but coverage of certain areas in which there have been significant developments in the past few years, and which are of particular interest to the author. Some general reviews still widely referred to are those by Witkin (1976), Harm (1980), and Hall and Mount (1981). In this paper, UV means 254 nm light, unless otherwise stated.
