— Resonance Raman spectra of various M 412 species associated with the bacteriorhodopsin photocycle have been obtained. These correspond to the two forms observed during the formation of M 4 1 2 and the two forms that are observed during its decay in absorption experimeents. We do not see any significant difference between the Raman spectra of any of these forms. We therefore conclude that the differences in these species are due to the differences in the protein structure and not in the chromophore.
