— We have previously developed a solar cell using the photochemistry of Photosystem I particles and flavin mononucleotide (Gross et al , 1978). We have now shown that phenosafranine (3,7‐diamine‐5 phenyl phenazine) is an acceptor of Photosystem I. We have used this compound to generate a photovoltage. The total power obtained was the sum of two photoreactions: the Photosystem I mediated photoreduction of phenosafranine and the direct photochemical reduction of phenosafranine by reducing agents such as EDTA or Tricine. An open circuit potential of 670 mV and a short circuit current of 1.6 mA (current density = 20 μA/cm 2 ) were obtained. The front face power conversion efficiency of the cell was about 0.2% at 110 Wm −2 light intensity.
